Guide for Authors
AIMS AND SCOPE.
Tourism is an international interdisciplinary journal publishing original scholarship that advances knowledge on tourism. The Journal welcomes theoretically informed, methodologically sound and internationally relevant contributions from across the social sciences and related fields. Submissions should offer a clear contribution to tourism knowledge, theory, methods and/or practice. Manuscripts that are primarily descriptive, narrowly local without broader relevance, or insufficiently developed conceptually or methodologically are unlikely to be considered.
TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS.
The Journal publishes original research articles, case studies, critical review articles and short communication articles. Except for short communications (1,500-2,000 words), submissions should normally be between 4,000 and 6,000 words in length. Word counts include the main text, references, tables and figures. The Editor may allow justified exceptions where warranted by the contribution.
EDITORIAL EXPECTATIONS.
Submissions should be original, clearly written, analytically rigorous and relevant to an international readership. The Journal particularly values work that is interdisciplinary in perspective, contributes to theory building and/or methodological advancement, and demonstrates clear implications for tourism research, policy or practice.
PUBLICATION ETHICS AND AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITIES.
Submitted manuscripts must be original, must not have been published previously, and must not be under consideration elsewhere. All authors must have made a substantial scholarly contribution to the manuscript and must approve the submitted and final versions. The corresponding author is responsible for the integrity of the submission, communication with the Journal, and ensuring that all co-authors have approved the manuscript. Authors must properly acknowledge the work of others and obtain permission for any copyrighted material reproduced in the manuscript.
DISCLOSURES.
Authors should include, where applicable, a funding statement, a conflict of interest statement, an ethics approval and/or informed consent statement for research involving human participants, and a data availability statement indicating whether data, materials and/or code are available and where they can be accessed. If there is nothing to declare under a particular item, authors should state this explicitly.
USE OF GENERATIVE AI TOOLS.
Any use of generative artificial intelligence tools in preparing the manuscript must be disclosed in the manuscript and/or cover letter. Such tools may assist with language or formatting, but they may not be listed as authors and do not replace authors' responsibility for the accuracy, originality and integrity of the work. Authors remain fully responsible for verifying all content.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION.
Divide the article into clearly defined and numbered sections and subsections; the abstract is not included in section numbering. Manuscripts must be submitted in clear English. The title page should be submitted separately and should contain the manuscript title, full author names, affiliations, ORCID IDs, the corresponding author's contact details, and any acknowledgements or funding information. The main manuscript file must be fully anonymized and should contain the title, abstract (up to 200 words), up to five keywords, main text, references, tables and figures. Authors should be consistent in terminology, abbreviations and referencing.
TABLES, FIGURES AND SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL.
Tables and figures should be kept to a necessary minimum and provided both in the main document and, where applicable, as separate editable source files. Tables and graphs created in Excel should be uploaded in Excel format. Photographs, maps and other illustrations should be submitted in high-resolution formats (e.g. jpg, png, tiff, gif, bmp, psd, cdr or ai) at a minimum of 300 DPI. In survey-based, interview-based or experimental studies, authors are encouraged to upload data collection instruments, interview protocols or other essential supplementary materials that facilitate review and transparency.
REFERENCES.
In-text references and the reference list must follow the APA Publication Manual (7th ed.). In-text references should follow the author-date system. The reference list should appear at the end of the manuscript and be arranged alphabetically by authors' surnames. Authors are responsible for the accuracy, completeness and consistency of all references. Where available, DOIs should be provided in hyperlink format.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION AND REVIEW.
Manuscripts must be submitted electronically via ScholarOne Manuscripts at https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/tour. The Journal operates a double-anonymized peer review process. Each manuscript entering the review stage is normally evaluated by at least two expert reviewers. The Editor reserves the right to desk reject submissions that fall outside the Journal's scope or do not meet basic scholarly, ethical or presentation standards.
FINAL MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION.
Authors of accepted manuscripts will receive proofs for final checking and should return any corrections promptly. After acceptance, authors may be asked to provide final editable files for tables, figures and other production materials. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript and the accuracy of all enclosed data.
AUTHOR FEES.
The Journal does not charge any article publication, processing, open-access or any other fees to authors. Authors will receive a PDF version of their article at no cost upon publication. Published articles are permanently available via the Portal of Croatian Scientific and Professional Journals: https://hrcak.srce.hr/en/Tourism.
SUBMISSION CHECKLIST.
Please ensure that the submission includes: (1) an anonymized manuscript file; (2) a separate title page with full author details and ORCID IDs; (3) an abstract and keywords; (4) all tables and figures in the manuscript and, where relevant, as separate editable files; (5) disclosure statements on funding, conflicts of interest, ethics approval/informed consent and data availability, where applicable; and (6) any supplementary files necessary for review.
COPYRIGHT, LICENSING AND SHARING.
Authors retain copyright in their work. By submitting to and publishing in Tourism: An International Interdisciplinary Journal, authors grant the Journal a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to publish, reproduce, distribute, display, archive, and disseminate the article in all media and formats, including online and in print, and to identify itself as the place of first publication.
