The paper serves as a follow-up to one of his earlier studies on the negative impact of tourism on higher education. Among its key arguments, Dr Kožić points out that the extensive growth of tourism in Croatia is largely a consequence of a rentier economy, significantly supported by a tax system that favours rent-seeking activities.
Now that tourism accounts for more than 10% of Croatia’s GDP, a level unprecedented among developed countries and European Union Member States—the long-term negative consequences of tourism development in Croatia could become severe.
