Increasingly intense summer heat is also influencing tourism behaviour. The so-called “coolcation” trend, referring to holidays in cooler and more climate-friendly destinations, is becoming increasingly prevalent, while destinations are adapting to the changing conditions.
Dr. sc. Snježana Boranić Živoder, Assistant Director of the Institute for Tourism, spoke to N1 about these developments, highlighting that tourism is already adapting to climate change.
“Guests are becoming increasingly active and are placing greater importance on environmental sustainability, quality food, the preservation of destinations, and all the natural beauty we have, which is truly a magnet for the guests who visit us.”
In this context, Croatia has significant potential to develop a diverse and year-round tourism offer, from coastal destinations to mountainous and continental areas such as Gorski Kotar.
Climate change is therefore not only changing the conditions in which we travel, but also the way we think about the future of tourism and tourism destinations.
