Assistant Professor Matko Krce-Ivančić Publishes Original Scientific Article Tourism and the Universal Drama of Work

Assistant Professor Matko Krce-Ivančić has published the original scientific article Tourism and the Universal Drama of Work in a special issue of the academic journal Narodna Umjetnost, dedicated to precarious labour.

Nearly fifty years after the publication of Dean MacCannell's seminal work The Tourist, the article revisits one of the phenomena explored in the book—the transformation of other people's work into a tourist attraction. The paper critically examines MacCannell's claim that the display of work enables industrial society to adopt a synthetic social perspective and experience its own role in the universal drama of work. Krce-Ivančić argues that the display of work serves a conservative function by encouraging tourists to remember that they, too, could become part of such a display, not as observers, but as poorly paid workers exhibited in the showcase of labour. The article demonstrates that the display of work ultimately reveals precarity as a fundamental characteristic of the universal drama of work.

The research was conducted within the framework of the AKULTUR research project (CroRIS ID: 9576; https://www.croris.hr/projekti/projekt/9576), funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU programme.
